With changing times, schools have to change their approach in involving parents in their kid’s activities to create a positive impact.
Fremont, CA: The involvement of parents has a positive impact on student’s achievements, and teachers and administrators at K-12 schools recognize this importance. Schools leverage technology to have better and meaningful relationships with parents and families. According to an educational research group, Pearson, teachers and administrators have identified that conventional parent-teacher conferences yield unsatisfactory results, notably for traditionally marginalized student populations. Platforms such as websites, emails, e-newsletters, specialized apps, and other digital media provides parents with access to what students do in class. These tools offer enriching tips to parents for learning activities their kids can do at home.
Additionally, technology enables schools, and teachers to communicate quickly about day-to-day school events such as fundraisers and science fairs. Video conferencing is also a useful tool to let parents partake in-class activities while being in a remote location. If parents do not volunteer regularly, they can feel left out. With the help of Facebook, groups, digital newsletters, and email chains, parents can stay informed and offer more support as per their convenience.
A lot of young parents are inexperienced in formal conferences and are intimidated. In some cases, they cannot get time off work to attend. Teachers have identified that texting parents is an easy form of communication. Simple texts explaining a student’s progress can be far more effective compared to a traditional progress report. When the school starts, teachers engage with parents via email or other platforms to determine the best way to communicate with them over the course of one year. They even advise them that they can be effectively involved with their kid’s learning.
Parents are interested in their kid’s progress. Using modern tools, parents can share a student’s progress, where they excel, and where they need improvement. Teachers can quickly share this information with parents rather than waiting until the end of the year when it might be too late. Cloud technology can create a place for teachers and students to store their work online. For instance, students can access all study material, and as the information is on the cloud, they can access it any place and any time. As millennials become parents, they expect schools to use technology to communicate. It is also an excellent way for schools to get organized.
